Channel Tragedy: Mark White reports as ‘very significant’ migrant boat disaster claims 12 lives

White detailed the timing of the incident, saying: “It was about 1130 in the morning local time, when rescue services got reports of a migrant boat in difficulty.”

He added that “a number of maritime assets and search and rescue helicopters have been sent to the scene.”

The swift response highlights the gravity of the situation as French authorities scramble to save lives in treacherous waters.

The tragedy has claimed at least 12 lives, with two individuals still missing and several injured, according to French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

French coast guard reports indicate that over 50 people were rescued off the Gris-Nez cape, with many requiring urgent medical attention.

This incident marks the deadliest loss of life in the Channel this year, bringing the total death toll for 2023 to at least 37.

Emergency services continue their efforts to locate those unaccounted for and provide care to the survivors.

Darmanin is expected to visit the site near Boulogne-sur-Mer later today, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
