Jack Draper responds to Tim Henman comments and makes ‘strange’ admission after reaching US Open last eight

Jack Draper has admitted he feels ‘amazing’ after Tim Henman said he produced a ‘masterclass’ in his US Open win over Tomas Machac on Monday.

The 22-year-old powered his way to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win to make the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

Henman was full of praise for Draper during the clash and, speaking on Sky Sports, said he produced a ‘masterclass’.

When told of this, the young Briton admitted he felt ‘amazing’ – though also admitted he found the showdown ‘strange’.

“First off I feel amazing, you know being in the last eight, my first quarter-final [of a Grand Slam],” he said.

“It means the absolute world to me.

“I felt like today was a strange match in all honesty. I’ve played him multiple times and it’s been a real battle, he’s got the best of me.

“And then watching his opening rounds here, I felt he was barely missing a ball and it was great levels so I understood I needed to be ready from the first ball.

“It was just a strange match, I feel it went so quick.

“I was trying to constantly get myself up because I feel a lot was going my way.

“I still feel like I could improve a lot of things but I was happy with the way I did the basics today.”

Martina Navratilova was one of the Sky pundits in attendance.

The tennis icon asked Draper what he changed in his game plan after watching him leave Machac’s hopes of US Open glory in tatters.

Draper replied: “It’s strange, I feel you play a lot of guys on tour and some have their days where they play great tennis and some when they’re not playing so great.

“With Tomas I feel he wasn’t at his best, so I had to do the basics really well, I had to control my emotions, I had to look after the points, the break points, and the moments it was a bit up and down.

“I felt like in general, from the mental side, I did a really good job.

“I’m happy with my performance and the way it went.”

Speaking on the court, meanwhile, Draper also paid tribute to Andy Murray – who recently retired from tennis after the Paris Olympics.

“I obviously miss Andy, shout out to Andy, what an unbelievable career the guy’s had,” he said.

“An icon of the game. I miss him in the changing rooms, I miss being next to his stinky shoes and all his stinky clothes!

“But Andy is a legend and if I have half the career he’s had I’ll be a happy man.

“I’m looking forward to it.”
