The Metropolitan Police has launched an urgent probe after “human organs” were discovered inside a container in a park in south London.
A member of the public made the discovery in Rosehill Park in Sutton at around 4.30pm yesterday.
Police have cordoned off the area where the remains were found and continue to investigate the discovery.
The contents of the container will be forensically examined.
Officers hope to determine if the remains are human or belong to an animal.
A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at approximately 4.30pm on Wednesday, July 24 by a member of the public who reported finding a container in Rosehill Park, Sutton containing what was described as human or animal organs inside.
“The container has been secured by police and the contents will be forensically examined.
“A scene remains in place at the location and enquiries into the circumstances continue.”
Rosehill Park is a short walk from Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children and St Helier Hospital.
The London discovery was made just hours after a separate incident in Sunderland.
A suspected pile of human remains were found by the River Wear at around 10am yesterday.
A force spokesperson said: “At around 10.05am today, we received a report of suspected human remains having been discovered on the riverbank near to Wear Street in South Hylton.
“Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene to carry out enquiries.”
